Basketweaving with Foraged Materials

Farm To Fabric, Hamtramck MI

Students will learn to harvest, process, and weave with vines, bark, and leafy material of common roadside plants. The class will focus on twining and plaiting techniques which can be adapted for use with foraged (or purchased) plant fibers.  We will discuss both traditional weaving techniques and more sculptural designs for working with this plentiful material. Students can expect to leave with information on harvesting and processing fibers for basketweaving, and samples woven with several basketry techniques.

Basketweaving with Foraged Materials

In this week-long class, students will learn to weave baskets and sculptural forms using natural fibers that can be harvested in our region. Focusing on using wild vines such as grapevine, kudzu, wisteria, honeysuckle, and bittersweet, we will turn "weeds" into weavers. Harvesting and processing will be covered in the first part of the class, and we will then learn several weaving styles so that students will leave with finished baskets and processed material.

Find inspiration and materials in the woods around you! Begin by foraging for vines on the Folk School's campus, then learn several styles of weaving to create useful vessels.
